Alternative to Your Standard Taco Seasoning: Arrachera

I copied that text from a comment on a DIY Goya Sazon article somewhere and then wrote the items in list form to make it easier to use. The stuff is awesome, I love it! I think traditionally you would rub this on a skirt or flank steak and let it marinate overnight, which I have done and loved. But it’s also really yummy on ground beef as well. In fact that’s what I’m making for dinner to use on a taco salad. I like to mix some chopped yellow onion into the seasoned meat while it cooks as well. You can also sub marjoram for oregano. I’ve actually heard marjoram called “mexican oregano.” I will be trying this mix out on my crockpot pinto beans next, for a vegetarian twist. If you have any ideas please leave your tips in the comments so everyone who comes to this post can benefit from your genius ;) or if you try this seasoning mix, I’d love to hear what you think in the comments as well.

Almost forgot…I use 1-3 tablespoons to each 1lb of ground beef, depending on my mood. I suggest seasoning to taste, checking the flavor as you go :)

I can testify that this is great stuff and you know exactly what is going into it!

I make our own taco seasoning since I can’t find it here. Actually I had to import some chili powder because I couldn’t find any ha! But what is this annoatto seasoning you speak of? I have never heard of it…doubt we have it here but will have to pick some up next time we are state side! Is it spicy? We have paprika here. I could use that…the rest I have handy…

The cumin sounds interesting on tacos…I’ll try it thanks!

I’ve heard annatto referred to as “poor man’s saffron.” Basically it is just for color, doesn’t have much flavor that I am aware of. I use paprika in my recipe instead of annatto because I’m too lazy to grind the annatto I have on hand. If you don’t put cumin in your taco seasoning, I am super curious as to your recipe. To me, cumin is quintessentially mexican. I put it in most of my mexican stuff, salsa, guac, pinto beans, seasoning mixes, etc. I hope you enjoy! Come back and leave a comment as to how it turned out :)
